Saturday migas at Fuzzy's...

Even though it was a gorgeous Saturday, I had exams to grade. I knew I wouldn't get it done at home (too many distractions!), so I trudged down to the office.

On the way, I started thinking about how to reward myself for such responsible, adult-like behavior... ...when I remembered that Red Cactus had opened just the day before! This would accomplish two things -- I'd be trying a new restaurant and presumably be getting yummy food out of the deal, and secondly, I could write about it on The Fort Worthian...

So I get a bunch of the grading done and it's been a fairly productive morning, so I start walking toward Red Cactus. When I arrive, there's a sign on the door, and they are closed for a private party.... Grrrrrrr... I ask you this: who has a grand opening on Friday and then closes for a private party on Saturday???? That's ridiculous!

Change of plan... What can I do? Oh yeah, Fuzzy's isn't too far away, so I'll walk over and have some migas there!

Fuzzy's serves migas all the time, but to me, it's especially tasty on Saturday mornings. It's not one of those power breakfast things, where you're going to have the energy needed to get things done for the rest of the day. It's more of a lazy Saturday breakfast, where you eat it and then decide a mid-morning nap would be nice... I dunno if that's really a favorable endorsement or not, but I certainly enjoy it!

So, to sum up:

  • It's stupid to be closed for a private party the day after your grand opening.
  • Migas are a yummy start to a lazy day!
  • Fuzzy's has good migas!

"Beer is proof ...

... that God loves us and wants us to be happy."

When ol' Ben said this, he must just gotten back from the Ginger Man, the best little chain of pubs in the nation. The Ginger Man, located on Camp Bowie Boulevard (map below), boasts 67 on-tap beers and more than 100 in bottles. They also have a short wine and cigar list, and they serve food. Interested? Click the jump.

Why the Ginger Man? It's a clean and not-smoky (smokers usually sit outside on their awesome patio, and their indoor air-filtration system is state-of-the-art), and the staff — Mike, Matt, Heidi, Justin, Reed, Chuy and the rest — is friendly. And they know their stuff, to boot.

When to go? You can go any night of the week to relax with a specialty brew, but your best bet is Tuesday for pint night. If you buy that night's beer, you can keep the glass.

The only drawback is the price. Their cheapest beer — Coor's Light, the only generic domestic they have — is around $3, but you pay for the atmosphere. Paying a little more gets you a chill pub where you can play darts and hang with friends. Great for a post-date drink or something to do when the parents are visiting.

Evil Eye: Rhett Miller and Murry Hammond in Dallas

Rhett Miller is a pretty, pretty man. He's also the lead singer of the Old 97's. As you might be able to tell by the picture, they put on a high-energy show -- and one of the most fun and entertaining.

Half of the band -- Rhett and bassist Murry Hammond -- will be in Dallas at the Granada Theater on Saturday, November 17th. The concert is also a benefit for cystic fibrosis, so your money will be well-spent in more ways than one.

If you want to go all-out, you can spend $75 and get a ticket to the concert, a goodie bag, and admission to a cocktail hour, during which you get to mingle with Rhett and Murry.

Oh, and don't forget -- the night before, on November 16th, Nickel Creek will be at the House of Blues in Dallas. For a Fort Worth girl, I'll sure be in Dallas a lot that weekend...

More Cat Powered Evil Eye

The Matablog says that Cat Power's new live/covers record called Jukebox is coming out January 22. Which is cool since part of it was recorded in Dallas. I wrote up a short preview of that show a few months ago, and boy that was a great show. You can read my review of the show here.

Modern Times: More St. Vincent

A little more word on that Modern show with St. Vincent. It's $15 for non-members, and free for Modern Members, which in my eyes, is a steal. Also, Peter & the Wolf will be there, who we've also mentioned on here
before.

It should be good. Check it out, man.

Weekend Round-up

Spent Saturday evening over at Fred's Texas Cafe listening to Sumter Bruton's band kick out a handful of really catchy rock 'n' roll, blues and R&B tunes under a beautiful, mild sky. Beer was consumed and stories were traded, but otherwise, it was just another easy-going evening in Fort Worth. What is the name of the group he's playing with these days? Looked like an incarnation of the Juke Jumpers

Good thing it wasn't today, or else we might have all floated off. Well, a few did anyway.

In other news, St. Vincent is hitting the Modern this weekend, which should make for a good show.

A little Fort Worth bootleg:

This photo-free post...

...is actually to announce something cool we're working on here at the FWorthian. Namely, in the coming weeks, we will be bringing some new photographers on to shoot some of the fun, cool, weird and otherwise neat stuff in the area. Some events, some art stuff, maybe just some quirky stuff. That last sentence could be our mission statement

I'm still recruiting other interested photographers, so if you're interested, send us an e-mail. Our e-mail address is thefortworthian@gmail.com.

I hear the train a'comin'...

Another Fort Worth blog (A competitor, perhaps? Nah, we're all friends here.) is helping in the push to get F-Dub its own streetcar system. I, due to my unhealthy fascination with rapid transit, think it's a fine idea. They're calling for a street-level, overhead power streetcar system that would run on four lines around downtown, citing that we're beginning to have the population density that's necessary to warrant such a project.

Again, I'm a big fan of rapid transit, and although I'd prefer an underground or above-ground heavy-rail system (much, much faster), I know that they're too expensive for our little metropolis. I've always said that if they were to put a train down University from Granbury Road to the Stockyards and another from 820 down Camp Bowie and 7th to ITC, many of our traffic problems would be resolved. Here's the proposed map at Fort Worthology that I'll link, not post, for copyright reasons.

This is a start. Even if it doesn't go through, it gets minds churning. And it's the logical next step for a booming town. Soon, we'll have our Fort Worth-DFW connector line, and Arlington has committed to trying a commuter train for the SuperBowl. They're even working on a second rail for the TRE, which would make that trip much faster.

The answer to our transit needs lies in diversified transit options, including (better) bus service for versatile routing; highly localized transit in dense areas (streetcars or at-grade light-rail); fast mid-distance options (above- or below-grade light- and heavy-rail); high-capacity, fast long-distance options (TRE and DFW commuter lines); and super-fast, high-capacity inter-regional routes (high-speed trains, such as Amtrak's Acela, Germany's ICE or France's TGV). Portland, which is around the same size as Fort Worth, is a few steps ahead on this process.

Where's the money come from? Tax the hell out of cars and gas. Yup, I said it. It's the only way we'll ever go green.

Evil Eye: Rilo Kiley

I'll be at Rilo Kiley this Saturday. The show is at the Palladium Ballroom in Dallas, and I'm expecting good things. You should check it out to.

Last year, Jenny Lewis came through Fort Worth on her solo tour. The gig was at the Ridglea, and in my estimation, it was pretty great. I can't find any videos, but, take my word for it.

Rilo Kiley plays at the Palladium Ballroom on October 6. Show time is 7:30 p.m.

A Little TV

So, tonight, I'm going to watch 30 Rock. If you're not watching it, it's one of the best shows on TV. Even though I've read the lead episode is not as good as some of the others. Jerry Seinfeld will be guest-starring.

Thursday is a great day for TV, and I'm sure some of you are wrestling with the pain that was Cavemen. What better to cleanse your palette than 30 Rock?

For the soft drink snob in your life...

Do you stress out about wine pairing? Which wine would best accompany my grilled salmon this evening? Well, here's something else to stress about... I stopped in at a Burger King the other night, and this made me laugh: (feel free to click for more detail)

For those of you who are unsure about what goes well with that Sprite you were craving, you're in luck! Sprite goes well with BK Chicken Fries, a Tendercrisp, or The Angus. Actually, The Angus pairing is a little confusing to me... I always thought the fruitier soft drinks went with poultry and seafood, like white wine. Shows what I know about soft drink pairings...

Coke seems limited to just Whopper pairings... I thought it was more versatile than that! ...and raise your hand if you knew Burger King had a Veggie Burger (goes great with Diet Coke!). I learned that just by reading this handy dandy chart.

The most fascinating part is for the Dr. Pepper pairings. It turns out that Dr. Pepper is for gluttons! Who knew? It starts out with the Double Stacker and scales all the way up to the Quad Stacker.

Not only did they give me a soft drink pairing education, but I got a free FryPod too!

Thank you, Burger King, for amusing me during dinner... Gotta give you credit -- I can't remember the last time I found a fast food place so amusing...

Any one go to the Wreck Room closing? I haven't really read any coverage anywhere yet.

If you're like me, you watch quite a bit of Hannah Montana. If you're not like me, you probably play sports.

OK, I don't watch near as much Hannah Montana as I watch High School Musical and High School Musical II, but I still thought I ought to mention she's coming here Nov. 14. If you have tickets, I'm assuming you've done something very unsettling to someone to get them. Weird.

On the other hand if former child actresses are your thing, I would suggest checking out the Rilo Kiley show at the House of Blues this Saturday. They're a fun band, and the first band this year to make a record that sounds like a Body Glove t-shirt from 1991 looks. It's called Under the Blacklight. A bunch of videos after the jump:

This is still funny. You're in New York now baby:
