Aaarrrgh! Cafe Express gone...

Some of my favorite lunch spots are dying like the dinosaurs! Last week it was Baja Fresh, this week it's Cafe Express... Places that I like, beware... I'm the kiss of death!

It's like Ft. Worth has been the place where chains go to die lately. I think the key to bringing a chain to Ft. Worth is putting it in a prime location where you can get the average West Side house wife on board. Without that key Ft. Worth deomgraphic your restaurant is doomed from inception.

This is disconcerting. I work at the Banana Republic at University Park, and Cafe Express was always my standard dinner on long shifts. Ever since McKinley's opened up, however, it's been really, really dead. That probably didn't helped.

It doesn't make sense to me really, because it really was in a prime spot in a flourishing shopping center. And unlike McKinley's, they had a bar, and having interacted with customers from the area, I assume that wine is an integral part of many of their lives. My only guess is that Patrick's West Side house wife got distracted by the lure of Blue Mesa.

As I recall, Cafe Express got terrible scores on their health inspections a few years back. Not that said scoring ever deterred my patronage, but I wonder if that had something to do with it.

Ok team, half baked housewife theories be damned. I did a little research and think I may have gotten to the bottom of this. It turns out that both Cafe Express and Baja Fresh are under controlling interest by Wendy's Inc. Apparently, the company has decided to "reposition" the Baja Fresh Brand and has also closed a few "underperforming" Cafe Express stores. So I guess that explains the mysterious closings of some of your favorite places.

I don't think Wendy's is going anywhere anytime soon though...at least we can all take heart in that.
